Citizen of the Year Award 2013

Five names were put forward to the Parish Council for this years Citizen of the Year Award. A panel of the Parish Council Vice Chair and 2 retired Councillors considered the entries with one nominee outnumbering the rest. The award was presented to Freda Proudley on 11th March at the monthly Parish Council meeting, by the Parish Council Chair Brian Suart.
They say if you want a job done ask a busy person and that is certainly the case with Freda. She was a pillar of the village Methodist Church for many years along with all its activities of fundraising, fetes, flower arranging and much more. This support she transferred to the village Anglican Church when the Methodist Chapel closed and both congregations joined together in a Local Ecumenical Partnership.

She has been a long time member of the Beckingham Institute, fighting hard to keep the doors open and encourage local people to use the facilities in this unique building, serving until recently as Chair for 12 years.
Freda has a seemingly endless amount of knowledge on village history and is a founder member and Chair of the village History Group which began as part of the Willow Works project started in 2005. Under her guidance and expertise as their leader the Group has gone from strength to strength with over 20 members. Their connection to the Willow Works remains where they have an office, a store for an ever growing number of documents and artefacts some of which are on display in special cabinets within the building.
Freda does much of the organising and behind the scenes preparation of the Groups Open Evenings and Open Days. Last years Open Day will long be remembered when both floors and outside space were taken up with their WW2 Display.

Freda does hair dressing for some of the village senior citizens in their own homes and readily helps them out if needed. She also does baking (her mince pies are much enjoyed!) for the Village Hall and Church fetes and is one of the first to offer transport and assistance in support of such events. As well as all that Freda has a much loved husband and family whom she always ensures are well supported. On top of which she still manages to find the time and energy to play her beloved golf. Freda is indeed a very busy lady willingly and quietly giving so much of her time. Many congratulations Freda, a much deserved award!
