Beckingham InstituteInstitute Interior

The Beckingham Institute dates from 1908 and was built by the Watson family, major benefactors to the village, as a recreational facility out of their concern for the social welfare of the community. It is vested in the Council for World Mission Charity as Trustees and is managed on their behalf by an Executive Committee. The original deed of trust decreed there should be no gambling, card playing or drinking of alcohol on the premises. These rules still stand today and in addition no food, drink or smoking is allowed.
The facilities have changed over the years and now consist of a Games room with one full-size billiard table used for billiards or snooker by adult members only, along with a three-quarter-size billiards table used for billiards, snooker playing pool by all members. Both tables are lit using a coin-in-the-slot meter. Darts and dominoes are also available. An annual competitions evening is held with trophies for billiards, snooker (singles, doubles and junior classes) pool and darts.
The Institute is open from 10am to 10pm every day except Sundays, Christmas Day, Good Friday and Easter Day. Entry is by membership only which is open to all people, aged ten years or over, resident within five miles of Beckingham. Annual membership is £5.50 for adults and £3 for 10 to 12 year olds. Family membership is £12.50. To join please contact Alan Kirk on 848544. The Institute also owns three garden plots situated behind the building which are let to village residents.

Major repair work on the Institute roof took place in 2009 with the help of a Star Energy Grant. On Friday 19th February 2010 an Open Evening was held to which everyone was invited. A dedication was performed by the Rev. Gillian Poucher from United Reformed Church, Gainsborough and a representative from Star Energy was present. Light refreshments were served and all facilities were free on the night.
